Onehunga has a rich history of both Maori and European settlement and trade. The name, Onehunga (meaning burial place), refers to Maori burial caves in the area. Because Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) was so important to Maori there were some significant battles on its slopes. Onehunga thus gained recognition of this through its name because of the many courageous and noble people who died and were buried there. Today it is a friendly, cosmopolitan community with 18,000 residents and almost 1,000 commercial and industrial businesses. The town is dominated from all aspects by Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill). Its commercial heart sweeps down to the beautiful Manukau Harbour.

Onehunga Community Centre is a happening place where local people participate and meet. We have an inspiring range of classes, exciting workshops and enlightening community services.

From its earliest beginnings, Onehunga, one of the oldest settlements in the region, has occupied a special place in Auckland's history.

The northern shore of the Manukau Harbour was an ideal place for a trading port, and the village quickly grew up around the waterfront. From this site, the pioneers set up trading with Maori. Industries such as timber milling and shipbuilding flourished, to be followed by others, and from the mid-1800s many substantial homes were built, some of which can still be seen today. Created a Borough in its own right in 1877, a status which lasted until amalgamation under Auckland City in 1989, Onehunga has enjoyed the benefits of a wide range of well-administered amenities, together with a strong sense of community.

Port of Auckland

The Port of Auckland is large container and international trade port on the Waitemata Harbour, lying on the central and eastern Auckland waterfront (north of Auckland CBD). The 55ha of wharves and storage areas (mostly for containers, cars and other large cargos) are almost exclusively situated on reclaimed land,[2] mostly in the former Commercial Bay, Official Bay and in Mechanics Bay.

Wharves (from west to east) are:

* Wynyard Wharf (also known as 'Tank Farm' or 'Western Reclamation', west of Viaduct Basin and mostly used for chemicals and liquids storage. It is to be turned into a mixed-use development and a park within the next decades) * Princes Wharf (residential development and cruise ship terminal) * Queens Wharf (proposed additional cruise ship terminal)[3] * Captain Cook Wharf * Marsden Wharf * Bledisloe Wharf (on which Stadium New Zealand was once supposed to be built) * Jellicoe Wharf * Freyburg Wharf * Fergusson Wharf
